Your home is a your sanctuary. If there is a sea of paperwork lining your sofa, or piles of junk littering your space, you may feel scattered and even unhappy. Cultivating a calm space can help you feel healthier and more positive. Create a more serene dwelling each day with these five tips.

Get organized: Disarray is an unpleasant distraction. Buy or recycle containers to store toys, paperwork, magazines or extra books.  Stacking books is a great decorative element on end tables or shelves. Station hampers in all bedrooms and the mudroom.

Houseplants: Plants are wonderful indoor additions, and even their green color is calming. They help purify the air, too. Freshly cut flowers from your garden will make you smile.

Pets: If you have a furry friend, breathe deeply while quietly petting it for 5-10 minutes without distractions. Your blood pressure will likely drop, and you’ll feel calmer.

Add beautiful art: Art that is more reflective of your present values and that’s uplifting can positively shift your energy. Inspirational art and photos can enliven or quiet your dwelling, depending on your mood.

Healing oils: Diffusing quality essential oils such as lavender oil can relax you and fill your home with peaceful vibes.
